Specialist Advisory Groups

The Molecular Genetics scheme provides external quality assessment (EQA) for a wide range of tests which are often performed by specialised diagnostics laboratories. Therefore the scientific advice is delivered by experts within their field and cross EQA support is not always possible.

On the recommendation of the UK NEQAS for Molecular Genetics Steering Committee, we have created individual Specialist Advisory Groups (SAGs) to advise and steer the Scheme to continue to provide a high standard of EQA for the wide range of tests covered.

SAGs have been set up for:

  • Molecular Genetics
  • Molecular Rapid Aneuploidy Testing
  • Molecular Pathology
  • Next Generation Sequencing
  • Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis
  • Non-invasive Prenatal Testing (this committee was disbanded in September 2015 and will be combined with the Molecular Rapid Aneuploidy Testing committee from February 2016. This is to ensure expert guidance is available to the Scheme during the development of pilot EQAs for non-invasive prenatal testing).

These Specialist Advisory Groups link into the overarching UK NEQAS for Molecular Genetics Steering Committee. For this Scheme, the Specialist Advisory Groups advise and guide on the practical aspects of the EQAs including the design of the format, compilation of referral cases, determination of scoring criteria, supply of EQA samples and the scoring of reports. The Scheme Director is, however, ultimately responsible for the overall organisation and running of the scheme.
